6th Grade – Spirit Animal

Grade Level: 6th

Medium: Mixed Media

Lesson Explantion

First Class: Students created a serious of experimental paintings on STEAM day. During STEAM day, students created artwork at 3 different stations that explored movement, gravity, and design. Students chose their favorite STEAM painting for their final project’s background.

Second class: Students analyzed art by Archan Nair, Louis Masai and Henri Rousseau. Then they learned about spirit animals, and how they can connect with animals and nature.

The Next two classes students researched their spirit animals and documented their research on Google Classroom.

After completing their research and gaining a deeper understanding on their chosen animal, students begun drawing their animal. They were required to show differentiated line widths and texture within their drawings. Once their drawings were complete, students chose their favorite STEAM day painting to serve as their background, followed by at least 1 colored paper that framed their animal and complemented with their background.

Once everything is assembled, the project is complete. Early finisher activities can be found in the Spirit Animal Packet.

The following class, students will have a musical chairs critique to provide their peers with feedback on their work.

Another idea for this project includes printmaking. For this project, students will learn about Japanese Printmaking, which includes the traditional Gyotaku method the Edo period.

Challenge
