5th Grade – Long-Term Curriculum

5th Grade = Globalization

Everyday there will be a green, yellow and red light exit ticket that will assess if the students understand the expectations of the project.  


Lesson #1:

Animals of the World

Challenge: Create an animal of the world in two different ways.

Media: Graphite and soft pastels

Media: Clay

Lesson 1: 2 Part Lesson: 6 Classes

Objective: Students will conduct research and create an animal.  This animal can living or instinct.  

1st Class: After research and planning, students will draw their chosen animal with a graphite pencil onto black paper.  After completing the drawing, they will trace the lines with Elmer’s glue.

2nd Class: Students will cover their glued drawings with soft pastels.  

3rd Class: We will focus on Clay exploration.  Students will learn about different ways to use clay. 
4th Class: Create your chosen animal of the world with clay. 
5th Class: After the clay has been through the kiln, students will glaze their work.  

6th Class: Students will receive their work back after it has been fired again.  Students will participate in a gallery walk.  Continue with next project.  

Reasoning: Every project consists of drawing in the planning period.  If is important for students to become comfortable with drawing and planning out their ideas. In addition, students will be able to explore a different type of 2D medium that is messy and hands on.
Students will experience clay and create 3D artwork that will prepare them for future projects.


Lesson #2:

Create a sustainable city 

Challenge: Create a sustainable city within a group.  

Media: Cardboard

Objective: Students will work collaboratively to create sustainable cities.  The sculpture will be constructed using cardboard.  They will utilize teamwork and build upon their communication skills, while learning about sustainability. 

Lesson 2: 6 Classes in Combination With The Previous Project

1st Class: After completing the Animal Project:  Powerpoint, then students will sketch and plan out their ideas independently before collaborating with their group.  Students will conceptualize and think independently, which will allow them to collaborate ideas with their group.  

 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes: Students will focus on the construction of their project.

5th and 6th classes: Students will focus on the details and decoration.  They are welcome to begin this process much earlier.  However, construction needs to be complete before the 5th class.  

7th class: Combine all of the cities together on a table and discuss our perceptions and incites with the class.  Begin the next project.  

Reasoning: Students will learn about sustainability and get to know their peers better.  This project will bring camaraderie and a sense of community within the class.


Lesson #3:

Representing Different Countries and Cultures

Challenge: Research a country and its culture and create a representation through printmaking.  

Media: Relief printmaking with Markers

Objective: Students will create visual representations of culture through relief printmaking. However, they will be using markers, in order to experiment with color and design.  

Lesson 3: 3 Classes in Combination of the Previous Project

1st Class: After completing the Sustainability Project: Students will choose a country, research and create symbols representative of the country and culture.  No more than 2 students in each class can do the same county.  Begin planning and sketching their ideas.

2nd Class: If they are comfortable, they will share their chosen cultures with the table.  Students will learn and view a demo on relief printmaking with markers.

3rd and 4th Class: Work on and complete the assignment  Reflect on their finished projects.  Do a class activity that assesses how their cultural symbols are perceived by others.  

Reasoning:  Students will learn about another country and culture.  They will create meaningful artwork revolving around their research.  They will explore a new medium and will better retain the information learned from the project.  


Lesson #4:

Global Issues

Challenge: Learn about a chosen global issue and either propose a solution or showcase the problem through recycled materials

Media: Recycled materials and glue 

Objective: Students will create a sculpture using recycled materials.  Their sculpture will either propose the problem or it’s solution.  Global issues could include: Pollution, Food and water security, Lack of economic opportunity and employment, Lack of education, Poverty, Inequality (income, discrimination), Climate change / destruction of nature

Lesson 4: 3 Classes in Combination of the Previous Project

1st Class: After completing the Printmaking Project: Students will prepare for the next project by thinking about the global issue and how they want to portray it.

2nd and 3rd Classes: Work on constructing their sculpture using recycled material.

4th Class: Half the class can be used to complete the sculpture and artist statement.  Class reflection activities for the rest of the class.  

Reasoning:  Students will build on their acquired skills and knowledge to complete a final sculpture.
